Anonymous stated that "It is clear that their families accepted them and their relationship..." but from all accounts I have read, that does not appear to be the case for both women's families. For example read Allison Glock's recent (June 2012) ESPN article At the Corner of Love and Basketball (http://espn.go. com/espnw/more-sports/7985309/malika-willoughby-rosalind-ross-had-tragic-love-story-espn-magazine). Glock interviews Ross' family and according to the article it appears that while Ross' mother accepted her daughter and her father, after a period of estrangement and a lot of internal struggle, also came to accept his daughter, Willoughby's mother never accepted her daughter as a lesbian. Anonymous makes a lot of good points and as an African American lesbian I can definitely relate to the frustration of hearing over and over the myths about the Black community or Black church being more homophobic than other communities, but I just wanted to offer the one correction.Dawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04847608287762695034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790832884400143603.post-68345126591423524372012-06-27T01:49:38.818-05:002012-06-27T01:49:38.818-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Japanese Used Carshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10709065065312191559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790832884400143603.post-11110710483953414732010-10-25T16:52:36.684-05:002010-10-25T16:52:36.684-05:00Anonymous, thanks for your comment. I wasn't trying to speculate about Malika and Rosalind's situation, but was trying to make the point that the intersection of racism and homophobia often makes LGBT folksof color's experience more complicated than for white folks. However, I did it poorly and I take your point about assumptions about black homophobia. PatPat Griffinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10294124976259446788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790832884400143603.post-14287350418261771692010-10-25T10:31:46.486-05:002010-10-25T10:31:46.486-05:00"I don’t know if Rosalind and Malika’s relati..."I don’t know if Rosalind and Malika’s relationship faced additional challenges because they were two young Black women who loved each other. I wouldn’t be surprised. Many conservative Black churches condemn homosexuality and so cut many LGBT people of color off from this source of community and support. I know that many LGBT people of color hide their sexual orientation to avoid isolating themselves from family, friends and churches."

If you don't know, don't speculate. It is clear that their families accepted them and their relationship so conjecturing about the "bogeyman" of the homophobic conservative black church being a factor in their lives does not fit with the rest of your essay. How many white gay couples can say that their parents support them and are friends with each other?

Also, you could replace the word black with "white" or "Asian" or "Latino" in this sentence: "Many conservative [insert race here] churches condemn homosexuality and so cut many LGBT people [of all colors] off from this source of community and support."

Yes, in some black communities the black church plays a big role in the social and spiritual lives of people. But not all blacks are Christian, some are even atheists (gasp!) and many black churches embraces their LGBT parishioners.

Why are white LGBT folks so obsessed with this "black church homophobia" theme? What about conservative Mormons, Jews and other religions? Who bankrolled Prop 8? Amendment 2? Other anti-gay legislation?

Here's some reading for you:
Myth of black homophobia keeps blacks and gays divided
http://thedailyvoice.com/voice/2008/12/by-seizing-the-truth-we-seize-001447.phpAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
